Service

I previously served as an Associate Editor for Criminology & Criminal Justice, Quality & Quantity, and—for a short period—The British Journal of Criminology. At the start of 2025, I decided to publish, review, and edit exclusively for diamond or similar not-for-profit open access journals. I am happy to review papers in any of my research areas for non-profit journals. Similarly, I would love to contribute to the creation of an international journal on Criminology/Criminal Justice based on Open Research practices.

In the meantime, I am a member of: the scientific committee of the Revista Española de Investigación Criminológica; the review board of the Journal of Legal Research Methodology; the International E-Journal of Criminal Sciences; and the ESRC Peer Review College.

At the University of Leeds, I am currently the Program Leader of the Quantitative Pathway for the BA in Criminal Justice and Criminology, I am a Co-Director of the Faculty of Social Sciences Research Methods centre, I am the Director of Quantitative Research Methods at the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership, and together with Dr Peter Tennant and Dr Roger Beecham, I co-lead the Leeds Institute of Data Analytics program Science of Data Science.

European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics

I contributed to the 7th Edition of the European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics as the national correspondent for England & Wales.

Empirical Research on Sentencing (ERoS) Network

I co-founded and co-directed (from 2017 to 2024) ERoS, a network of empirical sentencing researchers, bringing together academics and public sector researchers. During that time I co-organised four online and in-person international symposia. The network is currently led by Dr Mojca Plesničar, Dr Jakub Drápal, but I still lend a hand every now and then.
